Robotics Unit With Lego NXT

The 5th graders have been working with the Lego Mindstorms NXT robotics sets. To say they are enthusiastic is an understatement! Their first challenge is to properly build the robot named "Tribot". As students have been learning, every step must be assembled correctly before moving on, as even small errors can be quickly magnified to BIG errors. So far the two teams are about 90% done with the assembly phase. Next we will be moving on to the many intro programing challenges.

The Lego Mindstorms robotics sets have been around for at least 8 years. Lego just redesigned the sets last year and introduced a bunch of new sensors, which greatly extend the robot's funcitionality. So far we have the following sensors:

1. Ultra Sonic: Enables the robot to see, measure distance to an object, and react to movement.
2. Touch: Enables the robot to feel and react to its environment.
3. Sound: Enables the robot to hear and react to sound.
4. Light: Enables the robot to detect light and color.
5. Interactive motors: Ensures that the robot moves with precision.
