I am always surprised when older students do not have the multiplications tables memorized. There are many students that struggle over these - which should be automatic. I still remember the fierce competitions I had in Mrs. Lindahl's third grade class back in 1975. It seems that students are not asked to memorize the same amount of information today as then. I am not sure if this is a good or bad thing. Anyway, knowing the times tables makes the solving of algebra equations faster and less reliance on the calculator is required. Last week the high school students took a short multiplication table quiz. 40% of the students passed the required accuracy and under the time limits. Brandon is shown above taking the quiz.
