E.A.'s Dedicated Digging Crew!

Celebrating Earth Day - April 22, 2008

Thank you to Gustavo, Angel, Lino and David for digging 16 holes in the blazing sun to help the students plant 12 saplings and 4 plants! Some of these plants and trees were kindly donated by Ms. Doreen and Ms. Carmen. For fun we even named the trees.

It would be great to see the school a few years from now with all these trees much bigger! With all the construction that's gone on outside the perimeter of the school, and the loss of jungle vegetation, we at Escuela Anaco are working hard at creating and nurturing our own oasis within.

Earth Day Bulletin Board celebrating Earth Day on April 22.
A deligent fourth grade student hard at work!

In Science students are learning more about the body. We wrapped up learning cool things about our brains and are now studying our muscular system. Did you know that we have more than 640 muscles in our body?! If you looked surprised you just used some of the very muscles we're talking about, like the 30+ muscles you have in your face alone!

Room 3 Happenings

Yesterday we were busy with the Earth Day celebrations. I'd like to report that both Maria Jose and Samuel completed the 5K. Then they turned around and gave their best in the 100m dash. Maria Jose took 1st place in the 3rd - 6th category and she also should be recognized for being the fastest student in the elementary school, possibly even the secondary.

The Blue reading group (Fabio, Samuel and Maria Jose) have finished both the book and movie for Charlotte's Web. They are now working on an ABC video about the book. They will be spending this week and next on the project. We hope to share it at the last community time.

I will be out of the room on Friday. I will be traveling with Mr. Shaun and the high school students to Maturin for the Forensics tournament.

Earth Day Logo Contest Winners!

Congratulations to all participants for a job well done in our Earth Day Logo Contest. Sophia V. was the grand winner taking first place, followed by Luisana, a close second! Third place was a tie between Arianna, Samuel and Fabricio with a valiant fourth place given to Enzo! Super effort everyone!

We'll be celebrating Earth Day this Tuesday, April 22 with a 5 KM run/walk at school followed by fruit and juice. We'll be planting trees, collecting garbage and further educating eachother on environmental awareness.
A recent trip to Altos de Santa Fe revealed a not so pleasant 'vista' when the view point was strewn with garbage.
We need to try harder to: Reserve - Recycle - Reuse - and to Remember to use garbage bins to keep Venezuela beautiful.

Ancient Greece and a Revolution

The 5th and 6th Graders are continuing to cruise through the year.

The 5th Grade is about to take their exam on the American Colonies, which will be followed by a unit building up to and including the American Revolution.

The 6th Grade Ancient History class has just started to study Ancient Greece. Yesterday they researched about the many different dieties the Greeks worshipped.

In Math, the 6th Grade also began a unit on Probability, while the 5th Grade just finished their unit on fractions.

Adjectives

Typically when you ask a first or second grader to tell you how someone is feeling they will respond with: happy, sad or mad. In my second grade class we have been discussing other emotions, that characters in the stories we have read, feel. For example this week we talked about the words: proud, courageous, and brave. I want the students to understand and become familiar with these words so they will start to use them in their writing and everyday vocabulary.
